Most people need 5 to 7 packs of NC4 bone straight braiding hair for a full head of small knotless braids at mid-back to waist length. However, large braids can take as few as 3 packs, while micro braids or extra-long lengths can take up to 10.
If you’ve been wondering how many packs of bone straight braiding hair to buy, you’re not alone. Bone straight braids are one of the most-requested styles right now because they’re sleek, silky and swing like real hair. Unfortunately, pack sizes vary a lot between brands, so the number your friend used may not work for you.
In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how many packs you need by braid size and length. We’ll also cover how to install, wash and maintain your bone straight braids so they last.
How many packs of bone straight braiding hair do I need? Use this chart
This chart is based on NC4’s 150 g packs for a full head. Save it or screenshot it for your next braid appointment.
Braid style | Mid-back (22–24 in) | Waist (26–28 in) | Butt length (30–32 in) |
|---|---|---|---|
Large / jumbo knotless | 3–4 packs | 4–5 packs | 5–6 packs |
Medium knotless | 4–6 packs | 5–7 packs | 6–8 packs |
Small knotless | 5–7 packs | 6–8 packs | 7–9 packs |
Micro braids | 7–8 packs | 8–9 packs | 9–10 packs |
Why other guides give different numbers. Many brands sell thin 75–85 g packs, so their charts can call for twice as many. NC4 packs weigh 150 g, which means you usually need fewer.
Not sure between two numbers? Buy the higher one. After all, a spare pack is handy for touch-ups, and colours can vary slightly between batches.
What changes how many packs of bone straight braiding hair you need
Braid size. This is the biggest factor because smaller braids mean more parts, and every part needs hair. In fact, micro braids can use more than twice as many packs as jumbo braids.
Length. Longer braids use more hair per braid. That’s why NC4 bone straight hair comes in lengths from 22 to 32 inches. As a result, you can buy the exact length you want instead of cutting down.
Fullness. For a light, natural look, use less hair per braid. On the other hand, for thick, full braids, plan for 1 to 2 extra packs.
Your head size and hair density. A larger head or thick natural hair means more parts to cover. However, if you have fine or thin hair, you may need fewer packs.
Pack weight. Always check the grams on the pack. For example, one 150 g NC4 pack can replace two thinner 75 g packs from other brands.
Mixing colours. We do offer a select mixed/ombre colour range at the moment, you can request custom or mix it yourself. Planning an ombré or a blend, like two packs of 27 and one of 1B? Work out your total first, then split it by colour. Buy one extra of your main shade.
Tips to make your bone straight packs go further
- Spray before separating. Lightly mist the hair with a conditioning spray first, because it helps prevent tangles and static.
- Measure, don’t guess. Grab the same amount of hair for each braid. Otherwise, you may run out near the nape.
- Seal the ends well. Since bone straight hair is silky, it can slip. For this reason, braid/twist the tip till the end. You dip the ends in hot water or knot them securely.
- Keep hair smooth while you work. Run your fingers down each piece before feeding it in, so the finished braids stay sleek.
- Ask your braider first. Share this chart before you buy. That’s because every braider’s technique is a little different. Make sure the braider is experienced with siilky hair.

How to install bone straight knotless braids
Knotless braids start with your natural hair and gradually feed in extensions, so there’s no bulky knot at the root. As a result, you get less tension, less pain and a flatter, more natural look.
What you’ll need
Before you start, gather your NC4 bone straight braiding hair, a rat-tail comb, edge control or braiding gel, hair clips, mousse, sharp scissors, a kettle of hot water and a satin scarf.
Prep your hair
- Prep the braiding hair. Mist it lightly with a conditioning spray, then separate it into small, even pieces.
- Prep your natural hair. Wash, condition and fully detangle. Next, blow-dry on low heat or stretch your hair so it’s smooth and easy to part.
- Section your hair. Divide your head into 4 to 6 large sections and clip them away. Start at the nape and work upward.
- Part each braid. Use your rat-tail comb for neat square, triangle or brick-pattern parts. Keep them consistent, because part size decides braid size.
Step-by-step: braiding
- Start with your own hair. Apply a little gel, then braid your natural hair for 2 to 3 stitches before adding extensions.
- Feed in the hair gradually. Fold a small piece of bone straight hair over and add it in. Then keep feeding small pieces every few stitches until the braid is the thickness you want.
- Braid to the end. Keep your tension even so the braid stays smooth all the way down.
- Seal the ends. Dip the ends in hot (not boiling) water for a few seconds, then pat dry. Alternatively, knot them if your braider prefers.
- Finish and set. Apply mousse along the braids, lay your edges and tie a satin scarf down for 10 to 15 minutes.
Tip: Knotless bone straight braids usually take 5 to 10 hours, depending on braid size. For comfort, don’t braid too tightly at the root.
How long do bone straight braids last?
Bone straight braids usually last 5 to 12 weeks. Because bone straight hair has no curl pattern to lose, it often stays neat longer than curly styles. However, your roots will grow out and frizz over time.
How long yours last depends on your braid size, how often you wash and how well you protect them at night. Typically, smaller braids last longer. Leaving braids in too long can cause buildup, matting at the roots and breakage in your natural hair.
How to wash bone straight braids
In general, wash every 2 to 3 weeks, or sooner if your scalp feels itchy or you’ve been sweating a lot.
- Dilute your shampoo. Mix a sulfate-free shampoo with water in a spray or applicator bottle.
- Focus on your scalp. Apply it to your parts and massage gently with your fingertips. However, avoid scrubbing the braids themselves.
- Rinse downward. Let the water run from roots to ends so the braids stay smooth.
- Condition lightly. Spray a lightweight leave-in conditioner along the length of the braids.
- Squeeze out the water. Blot with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt, rather than rubbing.
- Dry completely. Air-dry or use a hooded dryer on low. Otherwise, braids that stay damp can develop mildew and a musty smell.
How to maintain bone straight braids
- Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase. This way, you reduce frizz and keep braids sleek.
- Smooth flyaways with mousse every few days, running it down the length of each braid.
- Keep your scalp moisturized with a light oil or scalp spray on your parts. Meanwhile, keep heavy oils off the braids, as they attract dust and build up.
- Rinse after swimming. Chlorine and salt water dry out the hair, so rinse with clean water as soon as possible.
- Trim frizzy ends with sharp scissors, and reseal them with hot water if needed.
- Touch up your edges after 3 to 4 weeks to stretch the style a little longer.
